WHY 'KEEP MAKING A DIFFERENCE' IS IMPORTANT

'Keep Making A Difference' focuses on changing three specific areas for the better; Prison Reform, Economic Empowerment and Climate Change. All are very important to us and the community of the Caribbean diaspora, to ensure that cultures, governments and businesses do their part.

OUR PRISON IS 72% OVER POPULATED

The perceived public sentiment in the Bahamas appears to be that prison is a means of punishment. However, the fact that 42% of its population consists of persons who have not been convicted and await trial and the population is 172%. Therefore beyond capacity suggests that those who are still innocent in law are equally subjected to the harsh conditions of prison.

By working with other NGO’s such as The National L.E.A.D. Institute and activists, we hope to bring about effective change in sentencing of juveniles and those convicted of non-violent crimes, rehabilitation and the conditions at detention centres.

36% OF MAJOR TOURISM PROPERTIES AT RISK

Sea level rise puts at risk 36 percent of major tourism properties, 38 percent of airports, 14% of road networks and 90% of sea ports according to the Inter-American Development Bank.
The Bahamas must focus on becoming resilient to the effects of climate change. On the island of New Providence, which is home to over fifty percent of the country’s total population, areas prone to flooding during heavy rainfall and major storms must be addressed.

PLASTIC IS A BIG PROBLEM

Each year, billions of plastic bags are used. The plastic in these bags, which is manufactured from fossil fuels, requires millions of barrels of oil annually. These plastic bags cannot be recycled. So, in The Bahamas, they end in our landfills or dumpsites or floating in our marine ecosystems. Sadly, some of them are eaten by birds, turtles and fish.

Imagine that, fish consume plastic and we eat the fish!
